The Mummers and Celtic Winter Solstice


Mummers often performed plays dressed in disguise, often using straw to cover their faces, and went from door to door. They usually requested and received food, money or some token of gratitude for their "performance."

The 'straw boys,' whose disguise is very similar to the mummers, might perform at wakes and funerals. This tradition died out almost entirely, but of late is coming back into fashion.
